Ford Repair: 2000 Mercury Mountaineer, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor

Question
I have a check engine light. There is a miss. IF the problem is a camshaft sensor or crankshaft sensor I would like to replace these myself. Where are these sensors located on the engine?

Answer
Jim, if you live near an AutoZone, take the truck to them and let them read the codes.  They do this as a free service.  Find out what cylinders are missing, and deal with it that way.  You can do a tune-up, and that might fix the problem.  If you haven't done one in a while, it certainly will not hurt the truck, and you might get some better gas mileage (even if it doesn't fix the miss)  A crankshaft sensor would not let the truck start (it would just turn over, and over, and over, etc)  A camshaft sensor is a slight possibility, but I would look more to the spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel injector, or ignition coil.  I hope this helps,   Jason
