Ford Repair: 1995 ford bronco, ford bronco, power steering fluid

Question
hello Mr. Lantry, in my 1995 ford bronco i have a few electrical problems, one is when i roll my power windows down sometimes the radio shuts off as if the power was cut off, then it comes back on. but the windows never stop and the radio works fine besides that. and the other problem is when i turn the steering wheel all the way until it stops, it begins to make a weird noise, and if held all the way to lock it will kill the engine. if you could help with these problems or just give me some insite i would greatly appreciate it.

                     thank you,
                            Micheal

Answer
Michael,

If you have an after market radio I bet they wired it to the same power source as your windows. The problem with that is when you operate the window you get a voltage drop and surge on that circuit. Most radios are very sensitive to this voltage drop and will cut out for a second. My old Lincoln had so many dome lights in it and the radio used the dome circuit for power, so it would die every time I opened the door.

As for the noise in the power steering that is pretty normal. The pump is under major pressure (around 3,000psi) when you hold the wheel lock to lock so it makes a hydraulic growl type sound.  I have had good success changing the power steering fluid to a Valvoline synthetic fluid and getting rid of most all the noise Ford pumps make.

As for the stalling, there is a pressure switch on the power steering line that is supposed to raise the idle when the pump is under heavy load. It is probably not working and causing the engine to stall out.

I hope that helps you out some.
