Ford Repair: abs hcu system replacement, rusted areas, brake job

Question
My 94 Explorer ABS 4X4 with 59K miles pulls left when braking, the left pads wear faster. After a complete brake job and installing new brake lines, the local Ford dealer indicated the problem is uneven pressure sent from the ABS HCU unit. I'm told this is not a serviceable unit and is obsolete with Ford.
If I get a used replacement are special tools are required? Any ideas for other options for me? thanks

Answer
Hi Norm,
The HCU usually doesn't have anything to do with brake pad wear! If you havn't done it allready, replace the front calipers and pressure bleed the system to make sure all old brake fluid is removed. Also make sure the place where the brake pads slide is clean, free from groves and is well lubricated.
If you do want to replace the HCU you need to make sure it is from the exact same year and model as yours. Check the numbers on the side. You will also probably have to take it to a Ford dealer after to have the HCU "service bleed" as it will have air in it and can't be bleed in the normal way.
Try the other things first. Also check to make sure the metal brake lines are OK. No dents from rocks or rusted areas that could cause your problem.GOOD LUCK!
