Ford Repair: Steering box, pitman arm, steering box

Question
I have a F350 7.3 crew cab. 140.000 miles
Front end is new. Everythink is good. Box is tight on the frame.
Steering wheel has a lot of play(2-3inch) You have to correct all the time.
I think the steering box is bad. Sould i take the time and try to adjust it or just replace it?

Answer
Hi Bill,
1st make sure that the pitman arm nut is tight. Use a      1 5/16" wrench to check it. If that is tight you can adjust the gear box by loostening the 16mm nut on top of the box and use an allen wrench to tighten the box. Turn clockwise to tighten 1/2 turn at a time until it feels right. Make sure that when you are done that the steering wheel returns after a turn both to left and to the right. If not returning, back off screw until it does. If still loose after adjusting, you need a new steering gear box.  GOOD LUCK!
