Ford Repair: car wont start, mustang gt, positive cable


Question
"89"Mustang GT Conv.-Car setting all winter,put in fresh battery turn key to "on", idiot lights come on,interior lights and chimes work. Turn to "start",hear one loud click everything is dead.Battery POS side gets hot to touch.  Unhook battery and reinstall,lights & chimes work again. Car will drain battery if left in car.

1. Make sure the engine will still turn. If you have the right tools turn the crankshaft by putting a socket on the front crank bolt, behind the belts inside the pulley. If you can't turn that then you may have a frozen engine.

2. Make sure the battery cable connections are clean and tight, both at the battery and on the engine.

3. The positive cable getting hot is the result of high amperage or resistance, either which could be caused by 1 or 2, or by a stuck or defective starter.
