Ford Repair: Sync Rows in Manual 93 Ranger Tranny, syncros, trannies

Question
Hello Steve,

I have some grinding in my gears as I am shifting for one gear to another.  Someone told me that it could be the sync rows in the tranny?  Are they right, and if so does that mean I have to get a whole new tranny?  Please tell me no and that they can fix it.  Thanks, also the engine light is on...

Answer
Kimberly-

Sure...it could be the syncros.  Basically the syncros (also known as syncronizers) keep the next gear moving so when you shift there isn't a huge shock to the gear , eliminating the need for double clutching like in the old days (or so I'm told).  The good news is you don't need a whole new transmission.  The bad news (if you want to be look at it that way) is that you'll need to rebuild the transmission.  You could probably find someone willing to just replace the syncros, but if the syncros are bad it's probably a good idea to do a rebuild.  For manual trannies it shouldn't cost too much.  Hope this helps.
