Ford Repair: 01 Taurus Rear Brake Drum Removal, rear drum brakes, flat screwdriver

Question
The rear brakes started to drag today on my 01 Taurus SE with 136000 miles on it.  The left side drum was boiling hot, so I took it to my father in law and the left drum would hardly move by hand.  So we tried to take the right drum off, as it seemed nice and loose to turn...wrong! We can't get it off. Looks like one shoe is stuck to the drum and the drum won't pull off. Is there an adjustment method or special tool to loosen the shoes so we can just pull the drum off?  This is the first time anyone has attempted to take the drums off. The Emergency brake has not been used and didn't appear to be applied either.
Thanks,
Shaun

Answer
If this has rear drum brakes, there is an adjustment slot on the backside of the backing plate, should have a rubber dust cover over it. If you remove the rubber, backing off the brake shoes should be possible. The shoes are probably worn so far they have grooved the drum making it hard to remove. Use a flat screwdriver to turn the adjuster.
