Ford Repair: 97 Ford Escort Wagon speaker, ford escort wagon, door latch

Question
I own a 1997 Ford Escort Wagon.  The stereo is nothing fancy, but last week the driver's side speaker went out.  Then in and out.  Then only in when I kicked the speaker, and now it's out completely.  So the sound only comes out of the passenger side and the back speakers.  Not a huge crisis, I know.

I thought it was a loose wire, so I tried to remove the door panel, so I could find it and fix it.  I was only able to remove one side of it - the rest was stuck tight.

This is a stupid question - how do I get that panel off?  I didn't want to force it, in case I broke or bent something.  We love the car, but I like sound from both ears as well.

I assume once I get the panel off, I should be able to see pretty easily if a wire is loose or what.  Maybe that is a HUGE assumption, though?

Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Dan

Answer
This is just a guess, but you probably need a speaker. Could be the connector is corroded or loose, that is true.

Here is how to get the trim panel off:

Door Trim Panel — Front
Removal

Remove the front door pull cup screw.

Remove the screw cap and screw from the inside door handle and disconnect the front door latch remote control link.

Use a suitable tool to remove the manual window regulator handle and the handle snap ring by pulling outward, if equipped.

Remove the two push pins from the front door trim panel.

NOTE: Use a commonly available spring loaded trim pad removing tool with a long thin nose to prevent damage to the door trim panel.

Release the seven front door trim panel bullet nose fasteners and push upward to release the front door trim panel.
If equipped, disconnect the master window regulator control switch electrical connector.

You don't need the special tool mentioned, just a flat blad screwdriver to pop the retainers loose once yo have all the screws and harware off.

There are pictures that go with these instructions, but I can't get them to copy. I hope this helps you, let me know how it goes.
