Ford Repair: Steering box, obsolete ford parts, old fords

Question
My question is: I have a 1964 fairlane, on the column automatic that has a bad steering box.  I was wondering if you could tell me if a 1965 ranchero 3 speed on the column steering box would work?  Why I am asking is it is still in the car and I would like to know before I take it out. Measuring from the box to the bottom of the steering wheel, it appears to be 1/2 inch to an inch shorter than the one in the fairlane. What I was hoping to do was to use the ranchero box and the automatic column  shifter from the fairlane. Or will any of the ranchero parts work in the fairland steering box? Can I use any of the ranchero parts to fix the fairlane steering box?  The problem with the fairlane is that it wonders. And could you tell me any other steering boxes that would bolt in?
Thank you, any response is greatly appreciated

Answer
Sorry to say I don't know if those parts are interchangeable. You might try to find a wrecking yard that may have books that cover those years, most have interchange books to tell them what parts fit what years and models. An understanding wrecker man or parts counter guy might be able to help you figure it out.

Otherwise do an internet search for obsolete Ford parts, you should be able to find someone to tell you what you need. There are many companies that deal in obsolete parts for old Fords
