Ford Repair: Ford engines, great swap, ford engines

Question
Just bought a 1964 Tbird with a 390. Would like to put in a 351W with fuel injection. Is it possilbe, what do I have to do, and whats the best trans to go with that?  Thanks in advance

Answer
Ron-

Normally I'd say "Sure!  No problem!" since 351Ws are a great swap for just about any car.  However, they weren't around until the late 60's so there's no chance another '64 T-Bird had one for you to swipe parts from.  Not to say that it can't be done, but it's going to take some customizing.  If a company called Kaufmann Products is still around, I'd get in contact with them.  They used to (and may still) have tons of swap parts and would probably know how to pull off such a swap.  Otherwise you're looking at having the whole thing fabricated.  Any shop that does hot rods could probably do this...they throw weird engines into all kinds of cars, so they'd probably know what to do.

You didn't mention if you wanted a manual trans or an automatic, so I'll give you both.  For me, I like the C4 for an automatic.  Some people might tell you to go with a C6...but it's way too big and sucks up a lot of power.  I only recommend those for big blocks (or a small block with big block power) or in extremely heavy applications like trucks that'll see a lot of towing.  If you want a manual, I'd go with either an upgraded 5 speed like a TKO T-5 or a Tremec 500 or, if you want to spend some more cash, a T-56 6 speed.  Now obviously you don't need the 6 speed...but man are they fun.  Hope this helps.
