Ford Repair: 1968 Mustang brake booster, vacuum line, steve simon

Question
I have recently bought a 1968 Mustang 2+2. When the engine is running I have no braking until the pedal is almost at the carpet but the brakes do work. With the engine not running the brake pedal will become firm if I pump it. The vacuum line to the booster is connected at the intake manifold jst behind the carb. Is the behaviour of the brakes normal for this age of Mustang or do I have something wrong? If I do have something wrong what would you suggest starting with?

Thanks Steve

Answer
Simon-

First of all, I'd make sure you've got enough fluid in the master cylinder.  I know it sounds silly, but it's a common issue with older cars.  If the fluid checks out, simply try bleeding the brakes.  Remember, always start with the wheel furthest away from the master cylinder and work your way closer one wheel at a time.  It helps to have another person help with this.  If neither of those steps work out, it may be time to replace the booster and/or master cylinder (I'm assuming there are no leaks in the braking system).  Simply put it's not normal for the car to brake like that...even if it is old.  I wouldn't be horribly worried if the brakes still work, but it's certainly something I'd check out before I did any real driving.  Hope this helps.
