Ford Repair: 99 Windstar - Overdrive Light Flashing, shift into overdrive, proper resolution

Question
Hello and thank you for having this service.

Model: Windstar
year: 1999
Engine: 3.8l (pretty sure)
Trans: Auto
Miles: 71,000

What we noticed is that when we are driving the vehicle and hit a speed of about 55 to 65mph that the O/D light begins to flash. Other than the flashing light there is not noticable problems. The trans does shift smoothly and does shift into overdrive. We took it to be looked at and recieved the following information. They indicated that there was a computer code coming up (Code # P0741) and indicated that the torque convertor lock up 100% PCM was at 376 RPM should be at 0, with the recommendation to overhaul or replace transmission. Once I started questioning more about the issue as to understand it, in particular how the trans effects the torque engagement, I began to lose confidence in the diag. So at this point I am looking to better understand what could be causing the problem as to determine the proper resolution. Again, from a driving perspective there is nothing noticable, no rough shifting, no banging, etc.

Thank you

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Personally I agree with you. What I would suggest is that you go to a different transmission shop and ask about the torque convertor being replaced. From the code, it sounds like the clutch inside is slipping. Also, while having this checked and or done, have the transmission serviced and the pan inspected for any parts/debris that might be in the pan.
