Ford Repair: 93 Explorer Scan Code, torque converter clutch, vehicle speed sensor

Question
93 Explorer w/4.0 SOHC, 60K miles.
The transmission felt like it stayed 'locked-up' while coming to a stop, killing the engine.  I could start the engine and it ran normally, but as soon as I put it in gear, the car lurched and the engine stalled (kinda like popping the clutch on a manual tranny).

I got two OBD II scan codes:
P0743 - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical
P0320 - Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit Malfunction

Question; did the engine speed input circuit malfunction cause the P0743 code?  Also, is the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) the same as the engine speed sensor?

Finally, do you think this is a sensor problem or a mechanical problem with the torque converter?

Thanks.

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
The VSS and Engine speed (RPM) are not the same. One is road speed and the other is Engine revolutions.
With the age of the vehicle...and my experience in what I usually see in the A4LD....I think you will most likely be looking at an overhaul or at the very least a new torque converter.
