Ford Repair: Freon in 93 Ranger, coolant system flush, ford ranger xlt

Question
1993 Ford Ranger XLT; 6 cyl.; 3.0L; AC/AT;
The air conditioner is running warm and have been told we need to put in freon. This truck requires the old type of freon that the normal person cannot purchase. My question is this: This truck will be shipped to Chicago for my college son to use there. If we don't have the freon replaced right now, does it do any damage to the compressor, engine,hoses, etc. as long as the AC is not used? Also, does low freon affect the defroster at all, since that is definitely something my son will need to use in Chicago. Also, if you have the time to comment on this: do we need to do something special to winterize this vehicle for a Chicago winter? Thanks for any response.

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
Running the system low on R-12 freon can in the long run damage the system. The reason is that the oil used to lubricate the internal parts is carried around by the freon to the various parts that require it. It's not going to ruin it over night.......but I would suggest you get it recharged and sealed ASAP.
As far as the winterizing of it goes...I would suggest a coolant system flush and replacement of the thermostat. Have the oil and filter changed (EVERY 3000 mile) and have the belts and hoses check annd replaced if worn.
