Ford Repair: 93 Ford Escort Auto-Transmission, friction material, tranny fluid

Question
Hello,
I have a '93 Ford Escort 4 door hathback with a 1.9 L and an automatic trannsmission.  Recently, when I was going up an incline on the interstate doing about 60 mph the transmission down shifted like it was supposed to.  When I reached cruising speed again, the transmission wouldnt shift back into overdrive.  I took the cruise control off and the tranny shifted up.  After I touch the gas again the tranny shifted down.  After doing this for some time it finally quit shifting into overdrive.  I drove the car home in 2nd gear at 55 mph.  I put a new tranny filter in it and filled it up with the right tranny fluid and took it out for a test drive.  After about 15 min (running temperature) the problem came back.  I am thinking shift solenoid.  What do you think?

thanks for your time.

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
When you dropped the pan......what was in it? Any metal or friction material? It could be a shift solenoid. I would suggest that you have the computer checked for fault codes. IF there is a solemoid problem a code should be stored for it. IF not, you might have other internal transmission problems.
