Ford Repair: 91 aerostar power steering, ford aerostar, power steering pump

Question
A friend of mine has a 91 ford aerostar, auto trans v6.  I don't know the engine size.  She put motor oil into the power steering pump.  what kind of damage will it do and how do I drain it out?

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
It's not the worst thing in the world.....but it's certainly not the best. The type of fluid that belongs in there is ATF. If you compare the viscostity of the motor oil to ATF ...... the ATF is much tinner and can be pumped easier. Motor or will cause the PS pump to over work and wear out quicker. The easiest way to drain it is to remove the return hose and start the engine and flush it with ATF. Have the return hose in a bucket.
Hope this helps,
Erik
