Ford Repair: Loud fan roar, fan clutch, fan blade

Question
Erik,
I've got a 1989 Ford E-150 with a 5L [302ci] 140,000 miles in excellent shape. It has developed a roar. It is slightly detectable upon starting. but is really loud when the engine revs up,such as dropping into passing Gear,or while in park, just revving the engine. It runs fine,It's just that the roaring keeps getting louder. It kinda sounds like a fan roaring or a cheap window fan on high. At normal idle it dosen't roar at all.Could this be a bad fan Clutch?Thanks.Gerald.

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
the way to check to see if the fan clutch is bad is......with the engine OFF, grab the fan blade and attempt to rotate the fan. Usually IF the clutch is bad it is in a locaked position and can't be rotated. When it does move, there is a "drag" on it.
Hope this helps,
Erik
