Ford Repair: Car will not Start, ford tempo, battery cables

Question
I have a '94 Ford Tempo. The car will only start when I bypass the starter relay (by the battery) with a screwdriver across the posts.  I replaced the starter and relay but still can not get the car to start with the ignition key.  Any idea what might be the problem?  I get a clicking sound from the engine computer control module when the ignition is turned to start.
I am not sure what else to check.

Thank you for your assistance.

Noye: The engine is the 2.3L 4Cyl with auto and the model is the GL

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
I would first start off by checking the battery and then check the battery cables......especially the ground cable. It sounds like the system is losing it's ground connection, because of the clicking noise you are talking about when you turn the key to start.
Hope this helps,
Erik
