Ford Repair: Hi Jeff, I have a 97 Mountaineer...., wheel bearing grease, grease seal

Question
Hi Jeff,
I have a 97 Mountaineer. I am having problems with the brakes "dragging". It feels as if the brakes are on all the time. I have adjusted the threaded rod behind the Master Cylinder a little but it hasn't done anything. Also, I'm not sure if this is related but just before you come to a complete stop, the anti-lock brakes kick in. Do you think it's a Master Cylinder that's bad or some sort of blockage restricting the fluid? Also, could it be the booster?
Any advice you could give would be very helpful.

Thanks Jeff

Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,
If your brakes are dragging, your rotors will be blue and the pads will be worn out at the wheel that is dragging. If you don't see any of this, they probably arn't dragging. If you find a wheel that is blue and pads worn out, the caliper at that wheel needs to be replaced. If all pads are worn out, the master cylinder or booster is bad. Replace the master cyl. first. Then pressure bleed the complete system to get all the old brake fluid out. The ABS problem is probably a bad sensor ring at the front wheels. It's in the rotor outside the wheel bearing grease seal. It must be straight with no dents or dings. GOOD LUCK!

Jeff
