Ford Repair: 88 club wagon fuel pump, ford club wagon, fuel pump

Question
hello there, i'm working at a lodge in Alaska and was told to change the fuel pump on a 1988 ford club wagon diesel. i believe it's a 6.9. Auto trans. my question is how do I do this? I pulled the old one, put in the new one, tightened everything and tryed to start. wouldn't start as usual and then tryed to use some starting fluid, it started up for a sec and started to BANG.... I have a feeling it was the pump because it never made that banging or clicking noise before.... could you please please please help me out?!?!? thank you for your help_ Mark in AK

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
First off.......you most likely now have internal engine problems....NEVER use ether to start a diesel....it WILL ruin it as you have just found out. I would suggest that you check the fuel pump for voltage going to the fuel pump and work from there. Also, you have the injector timing to take in to consideration..........has it been checked?
