Ford Repair: replaceing axle, mercury topaz, hot grease

Question
i replaced an axle in my mercury topaz,1989...after driving it only 12 miles it now vibrates ..like my wheels are shaped like eggs ...after parking it i noticed a odd smell...hot grease ?...it was so simple ..pull the other out and put this one in and bolt everything back up ..what could have went wrong ?

 It sounds like the wheel bearing is not longer in tact.
