Ford Repair: 1997 t-bird starting problem, crankshaft sensor, ford service

Question
Erik,
Thanks for the answer. I have a code puller, but
I guess a code recorder is something different?
The only code that showed up was P1000. Usually no codes show up. Someone mentioned the crankshaft sensor or the ignition module? or maybe the brain?
can i buy a inexpensive code recorder.
The car is a 1997 4.6 tbird. stock. only 88,000mi.
Thanks for you advice. Michael

this is a 1997 ford t-bird auto trans - 4.-something - i think (not my car) sometimes the car will not start - maybe once a month maybe 2 days in a row - it will crank - fuel pump engages - took it to keefe and sons in mojave (very good ford dealer) they could not find problem - took to his own mechanic.....same result - then....walla, for no apparent reason it will start - be fine for a time but will eventually do it again - suggestions?

Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
What I would suggest is that you request from Ford a portable fault recorder. This machine would get hooked up to your vehicle's computer and when the problem happens, you would press a remote start switch. This in turn would record ALL of the data that the computer is seeing...and they would or should be able to identify the problem from there.
Hope this helps,
Erik

The recorder isn't something that you would want to buy. It is are part of the Ford Service Bay Diagnostics System, running at about 80k dollars. The well equipped Ford dealership should have it.
