Ford Repair: 1991 Mustang, oil additive, oil pump

Question
We recently purchased a mustang for our 16 year old daughter. When we got it home we changed the oil and it was very dirty and thick. After driving it we do not get any oil pressure and the lifters have begun to peck. We had someone look at it and they couldn't find the problem. We discussed this with the previous owner and found out this car had not had the oil changed since
2003. They said it had set for over a year. Any Ideas? Do you have to remove the engine to change the oil pump on this car? Any help will be appreciated.

Answer
Barb-

After sitting for a year, I'm suprised the thing's even running.  Here's what I'd try before tearing into the engine.  Buy enough oil and filters for 2 oil changes and buy 2 bottles of oil additive.  Anything like Lucas or Prolong will work.  Change the oil and add one bottle of additive.  After that, run the engine for a somewhere between 100-200 miles.  Hopefully the oil pressure will go to normal.  If not you'll probably have to replace the oil pump.  And yes, you will have to lift the engine to get to the oil pump.  If the pressure looks good after running it for that time, change the oil out again and add the second bottle of additive.  It's possible that some repair will be necessary after having a car that sat for so long, but oil changes are cheaper than engine repair.  Hope this helps.
