Ford Repair: replacing an idler arm on a ford econoline van, ford econoline van, ford econoline

Question
My 1994 Ford econoline van  has a loud whiny noise when running. I've been told I need to replace the idler arm, does this sound right? Is this a difficult job? I'd like to do it myself, can you give me any direction? Thanks

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
No it doesn't even sound close to right. An idler arm is part of the steering system. If the noise is present when you start the engine and remains there and increases as the throttle increases, I would suggect you take a look at the drive belt and associated pulleys(water pump, alternator,AC, power steering).
Hope this helps,
Erik
