Ford Repair: engine, distributor cap, ford explorer

Question
Hi, I have a 92 ford explorer. Yesterday I was driving down the road and all of a sudden it slowed way down and then died. I thought it was out of gas so I got it to the gas station and filled it up. At first it would turn over but it wouldn't start, after a few times it finally started up. I drove it home and it was running fine. 45 minutes later I tried to leave again and it won't start. It will turn over but won't start. Do you have any idea what the problem could be? Please help.
Thank you, It's greatly appreciated.
Tracy

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
You'll need a few things to check your vehicle out. A fuel gage, and a helper. You can most likely rent a fuel gage at a local parts store w/instructions. I would check for fuel pressure first. And IF it is present, then I would check for spark, by removing one of the ignition wires from the distributor cap and have a friend crank the engine over(like they were trying to start it). You should see sparks jumping from the ignition tower on the cap where you removed the wire from.
Let me know how this works,
Erik
