Ford Repair: Ford 292 - Puff of Smoke, intake manifold gasket, 1964 ford f100

Question
Hey Ken,

Here is what I have. A 1964 Ford F100, 292, with less than 3,000 miles on a rebuild. Has always run great. Right now, it is letting out a puff of smoke when I go from 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd. Not a major puff, just a medium size one.  And right now my engine seems to be missing just a little.  Any thoughts on the cause of the smoke?  Thank you for your help.

JD.

Answer
Mr. DeMoss,

Well, it depends on the color of the smoke as to what might be the cause. White smoke is usually a sign that you could have a bad head or intake manifold gasket or that you have a blown head, blue smoke could be rings or valves, black is usually a stuck choke. As for the missing, check for a loose or bad spark plug wire or a bad or loose plug, which could also be the cause of the smoke. Hope that this helps and if you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.Good luck.

Ken
