Hi Ken,

My power top motor isn't working - I can hear the motor hum when I pull the knob, but the top doesn't move.  Any idea about where I should take it (Portland, OR) or how much I should expect to spend to fix it?  Thanks for your time.

Kevin,

It sounds like you have one of the following: a bad pump, bad vaccum line or a bad motor. To find the pump you will need to remove the rear bench and the seat back. You can purchase a repair kit from Mustangs Unlimited (www.mustangsunlimited.com) you can also get a new pump as well as new motor from them as well. Hope that this helps and if you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Good luck.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the quick reply.  My follow up is to ask how difficult a job it is to replace the pump, lines, and motor.  I'm having trouble finding someone to do the job here in Portland so I may be forced to do it myself.  Any advice or instructions?

Thanks again,

Kevin

Answer
Kevin,

Basically once you get the back seat out, you will know what you need to do. However, here are the instructions for removing and installing the motor and pump for your convertible top:

1) Operate the top to the fully raised position 2) Remove the rear seat cushion and seat back 3) Disconnect the motor leads and the ground wire 4) Remove the filler plug and vent reservoir, to equalize the pressure. This prevents fluid spraying on to the trim and paint finish when the hoses are disconnected. 5) Place cloths under the hose connections, disconnect the hoses and then plug the open fittings and lines 6) Remove the attachement nuts aand lift the motor and pump assembly from the floor pan. Take care not to lose the rubber grommets. 7)Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Bleed the system.
