Ford Repair: door lock remote, remote keyless entry, ford vehicles

Question
My daughter just bought a 1996 Contour, it didn't come with a keyless door remote, we bought her one.  The insturctions say there is a plug behind the glovebox that we are supposed to jump and that will make the horn "chirp", then hit a button on the remote to program it.  We looked and didn't find any wire that wasn't plugged into a box, do you think you can help us?

Thanks,
Marc and Joyce

Answer
This is a common issue when used cars are purchased.  Not all Ford vehicles are built with remote keyless entry.  The instructions that you have are correct. If this vehicle has remote keyless entry, the programming connector will be behind the glove compartment, near the passenger front kick panel.  The connector will have a white and a brown wire in it.  Some vehicles are built using the same wiring harnesses, even if optional equipment is not ordered.  If this is the case with this model, there would be two (13 position) connectors wrapped in electrical tape behind the passenger front kick panel.  You would have to install a remote keyless entry module for this vehicle onto these connectors to activate this feature.

I hope this helps,
Dave
