Ford Repair: Aluminum Wheels, aluminum wheels, ford dealer

Question
I have aluminum wheels on my 2001 Ford Explorer.  I recently notices some corrosion on them at the same location as the weights they use for ballancing.  I am under the impression that these are lead weights and that they are causing some chemical reaction to take place speeding the corrosion of the surface of the wheels.  Is there a way to combat this and prevent it from spreading?

Thanks

Answer
Dennis, you're absolutely right - the corrosion is from the lead weights and the allow wheels, and there are coated weights available to prevent this.
Your larger tire stores and Ford dealer would normally use them (there are several different types, sizes, and coatings available today for various wheels - even the small Ford dealer where I work has 4 different types of weights).  If the correct weight can't be found, stick-on weights would be acceptable and leave no marks on the wheels.
Hope this helps... and Happy New Year!
