Land Rover Repair: 97 Disco Sunroof jams up, sunroof assembly, sun roof

Question
John,

The front sun roof on my '97 Discovery no longer
opens properly.  Instead of the glass opening first and then sliding back, it is sliding back before the glass opens far enough.  I tried lubricating it but this changed nothing.  Any idea's?  Thanks.

Michael

Answer
Your problem is probably the sliding tracks that tilt and then move the roof back and forth.  Land Rover does sell them, but to install them you have to drop the headliner, remove the sunroof assembly, and take it apart on a table.  So it's a big job.

The design of the 97 sunroofs was flawed and Land Rover has recommended replacing the entire roof.  You still have to drop the headliner and remove it but you do save the teardown labor and it's all new and better.

I think you'll find tracks cost about $300 and a whole roof about $500, so there's not a huge increase in cost and it's a lot less work and a better design.
