Ford Repair: Ford Escort Manual Trans., ford escort manual, vehicle speed sensor

Question
I replaced an axle halfshaft. In the process I lost 10-12 oz.of trans. lubricant. I think to refill I'll have to pull speedo cable/gear assy.
If so how do you pull it? Will driving 12 oz low do any short term harm to trans? I know the trans uses Dextron but the fluid that came out smelled like it might have 90 wgt in it.(I had the clutch replaced once and I'm afraid somebody may have automatically refilled with 90 weight) Will that kill the tranny?  The car is 1994 Escort 1.9 w/5 speed.

Answer
My Service Manuals only go back to 1996 for Escorts.
The transmission in a 1996 1.9L is a F25M-R, so check the I.D. tag, it is probably the same.
Yes, you must remove the Speedometer Cable and the Vehicle Speed Sensor to fill this transmission.  The VSS must be pried out gently after removing the one bolt holding it on.  The tranmission only holds 2.83 quarts of SAE 75W-90 oil, so being 10-12oz low may risk damage.
(The G25M-R in 1.8L models holds 3.33 quarts of MERCON.)

I hope this helps,
Dave
