Ford Repair: check engine light, ford f 150, trouble code

Question
my check engine light just recently came on. it sputtered a little bit, like it wasn't getting enough gas. the check engine light flashed about 3 times then stayed illuminated. does this mean that there is water in my gas, or does it have something to do with my fuel pump or filter?  Any information will help. thank you

I have a 1998 Ford F-150  2wd 4.2L

Answer
The Check Engine Light started flashing because the engine was misfiring and running rough, it stayed on because the system stored a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). You should have the system scanned to retrieve the code.  The code will indicate where the problem is.  I don't think the problem is with the Fuel Pump or Filter, more likely it is a bad Spark Plug and/or Wire.

I hope this helps,
Dave
