Ford Repair: Speed limiters, 1996 ford thunderbird, ford thunderbird

Question
Hi, I just bought a used 1996 Ford Thunderbird for my son's first car.  I am concerned that he will go too fast. Is there a way I can put a speed limiter on the car so that he doesn't go faster than, say 75 mph, on the freeway?

Answer
Mike-

This an odd one for me...people are usually asking how to extend the limiters, not lower them.  If the car has a factory speed limiter then it may be possible.  I know in the past people have used custom computer chips to raise the limiter...I don't see any reason it couldn't be done to lower the limiter.  Ironically to get one of these chips you'd have to go to a speed shop...anywhere that has the ability to burn a chip.  If the car doesn't have a factory speed limiter, you may still be able to burn a chip to lower the rev limiter in overdrive.  Just figure out what rpm the car would be turning at a given speed and see if you can't limit it to that rpm in a particular gear.  You might contact the good folks at Superchips or Diablosport and see what they have to see.  Hope this helps.
