Ford Repair: F-250 2000 Ford Truck- Water in Fuel, fuel light, ford parts

Question
I hope you have an answer for this problem.  I'm having trouble with the Water in Fuel light coming on.  My truck is a F-250 Ford 2000 Powerstroke with a 7.3L diesel.  Not long ago the water in fuel light came on and we found the switch to dump the excess water.  We thought we got some bad fuel, but it has been happening too often lately.  We dump the eccess water then the light stays off for awhile.  We just replaced two batteries, the extra cranking took it's toll on the batteries.  It runs good, except for the Water in fuel light coming on.  Do you have and recommendations we can tell the Ford mechanic?  Thanks for the info!  Mary Ann Bliven

Answer
I would say that if, when your "Water In Fuel" light comes on and you release the water and the light goes off, the system is working properly.  You have probably heard this, but you should try to go to stations that sell a lot of Diesel Fuel.  They tend not to accumulate water in their tanks, and they remove it immediately when discovered.  It is not uncommon to have to replace the batteries after 3 to 4 years on this vehicle.  The only good advice I have for this vehicle is to stay up on its maintenance.  Drain the Water Seperator, change the Fuel Filters, Engine Oil, and Air Filter regularly and use Ford Parts.  These engines are strong and will last a long time if maintained well.

I hope this helps,
Dave
