Ford Repair: i have an 89 f-150 with a..., spark plug wires, distributer cap

Question
i have an 89 f-150 with a 300 4.9 liter inline 6 when you start the truck the fuel smells strong and the vehicle dies and when you are driving it it cuts out and boggs downn acting like it is not getting enough fuel and you have got to floor the vehicle to get the vehicle to come out of it and excellerate and this process repeats itself and does not get any better. I have had a fuel pressure test done and it came back ok i have replaced the fuel filter, spark plug wires, spark plugs, distributer, distributer cap, mapp sensor, mass sensor, and all air filters. I have also had the grounds tested  and they all appear to be ok and i have sprayed ether around the manifold to see if there was an air leak and there is not. and at times the truck backfires to. I am wondering if it could be the fuel injecters or the processer or something i have not thought of if you have any input that would be great thank you Adam Bailey further more the truck use to only act up right after you started it for the first 5 to 10 minutes and then i replaced the battery and since then it has been acting up all the time

Answer
Yes, it could definitely be the fuel injectors and/or processor.  I recently repaired a '94 T-Bird 4.6L V8 with the same symptoms.  A fuel injector was stuck open.  The injector gets a pulse from a "Driver" built into the processor to open and fire.  You can test the injector wires with a test light while cranking the engine, it should flash as the engine turns over.  (I would disconnect the coil, so the engine doesn't start.)  If it stays lit, the driver is shorted and the processor must be replaced.  I would also replace the injector in that circuit, so not to damage the replacement processor.
p.s. Take a minute and double-check the firing order and spark plug wires.

I hope this helps,
Dave
