Ford Repair: 98 Contour 4 cyl auto trans, no fwd gear work, forward gears, salvage yard

The car will not go into D,2or3.  I hear the release when I step on the brake to allow the trans to be engaged.  Reverse works but no forward gears. Linkage? or major trans work?

It sounds like you have blown your transmission up. Ford had particular trouble with that transmission, unfortunately. If you go rebuilt with the transmission you are looking at $1500 to $2000,and if you go with a used transmission, which you can obtain from a reputable salvage yard, you are looking at between $700 to $1000. However, the latter route, you are taking a big chance because there is no guarantee on it. Hope that this helps and good luck.
