Ford Repair: 1996 Ford Escort Wagon - jumpy, ford escort wagon, proper diagnosis

Question
We have a 1.8 Litre 1996 Ford Escort Wagon.

It has about 140,000 km on it.

It has been really jumpy when stopped at intersections almost as if it wants to stall.  It has not stalled yet.

It also makes a very loud noise when accelerating and then it goes away.  Also a smell of gas seems to enter the cabin as well.

We took it in for a tune up, the ignition wires were changed, the fuel injectors cleaned, etc., but the car still has the same problems.

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Answer
Maria, a lot of different things could make your vehicle run poorly, and if I throw possible answers to you I may lead you to the wrong conclusion:
You need to have a trained technician diagnose the problems.  I fuel leak could be dangerous... the near-stall and rough idle may be due to that or something else.  Since a tune-up didn't change it, go back to the basics and have a proper diagnosis done first, then decide which items you can handle and which ones need the technical expertise of the professionals.
Hope this helps you make a good decision - those Escorts are still pretty popular and can run forever!
