Ford Repair: Transmssion code..., overdrive transmissions, crown vic

I bought an 88 crown vic ltd 5.0L HO with a vin of 2FABP74F7JX1144355,  and i believe the axle/tranny codes on the door ID is as such...AX-8, TR-TCMDD, I am trying to find out what tranny this has, i know its an auto but dont know if its an AOD or what..any help would be appreciated. can it be identified by the tranny pan? i know some vehicles can be. thanks again.

  If it's the stock transmission...3 speed with ooverdrive...it's an AOD.  AODEs didn't come around until later and Ford didn't have any other overdrive transmissions with the capability of moving a 2 ton car around reliably.  Hope this helps.
