Ford Repair: Ford Explorer starting problems, motor brushes, diagnostic analysis

Question
I have a 1994 Explorer Sport 4-wheel drive, 6 cyl, with about 109000 miles on it.  The other day the car would not start, the engine turned over but wouldn't engage.  We had it towed to the garage but they could not replicate the problem and there were no codes that came up on the computer diagnostic analysis. Someone told me that it might be the starter motor brushes.  On a 10 year old vehicle, that sounds reasonable.  I would like to try to remove them and clean or replace them.  First, do you think that is the problem and second, if it is the problem, where are they and how do I remove them?

Answer
Jim-

If the motor is turning over then the starter is ok.  Even if the starter was bad, brushes aren't something you can really replace.  You just buy a new starter.  It sounds to me like you've got more of a fuel or ignition problem than a starter issue.  Without seeing the car in person and seeing the problem, I can't really nail down exactly what it it, but if it happens again chances are a shop will be able to pin it down.  Hope this helps.
