Ford Repair: Fuel Pump, ford automobile, friends dad

Question
I own a 95 Ford Explorer 4.0 EFI V6 4x4, I recently had a issue with the SUV not starting so I had a friends dad (who's a mechanic) take a look at it. He proceeded to tell me it was my fuel pump and replaced the pump for a small fee. Now after about 5 minutes of driving the Check Engine light comes on and driving is really jerky. Feels like if you were pumping the gas pedal up and down. Also it seem like when I initial press the gas to go there's a small delay then the SUV lunges as if the gas is not making to the engine fast enough. Do you have any thoughts on what could be wrong after replacing the fuel pump?

Answer
Chris, I'd check the fuel pressure.  It should be over 32 psi at idle, and over 40 with the pressure regulator unplugged.  It is possible that the old pump had failed, and the new pump isn't putting out the necessary pressure.   I've seen many aftermarket pumps do this, and that is why I will only use a Ford pump in a Ford automobile!
If it does turn out to be low pressure causing your problem, as the mechanic if their is any parts-warranty for the pump he installed.  You may be able to get a new pump at n/c, although the labor wouldn't likely be covered.
Hope this helps...
