Ford Repair: A/C, clutch bearings, reconditioned compressor

Question
Hi, I own a 1966 mustang coupe with a 289 2v. It has factory air that doesn't work too well. I took it to a mechanic and was charged over $700 for basically nothing. They changed out the dryer and put in a reconditioned compressor. The air is cool (not cold) and there is a grinding sound when it is running. The engine sounds as if it is really laboring when the A/C is on. I live in San Antonio, TX and a functioning air conditioning unit is necessary for survival due to the extreme heat. The mechanic who ripped me off said that the problem could be the clutch (bearings?). Is there anything I can do besides taking it to another mechanic to be overcharged again? I would appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks.

Answer
Mr. Feathers,

I am sorry to say that you did indeed get ripped off.

Yes, your clutch bearings could be the problem. And without specialized tools there is nothing you can do about it.

There is a company called Classic Auto Air that carries comprehensive parts and systems for 64-73 Mustangs. I am recommending that you contact this company and ask them for further assistance: CLASSIC AUTO AIR MANUFACTURING CO., 2020 W Kennedy Blvd, Tampa, FL 33606, Phone: 813-251-2356.

Sorry that I can not be of further assistance to you. I hope that this helps and good luck.

Ken
