Ford Repair: 1993 mustang sulpher smell, o2 sensors, sulphur odor

Question
Hi Steve,
I have a 1997 Mustang V6, auto trans with 115,000 miles. This has been an excellent car since new.
Lately, the car has a strong sulphur odor coming from the exhaust or under the car...not sure. Also the "check engine" light is on. It's been running ok, and I plan to have the light checked. Any idea about the sulphur smell or check engine light? Is one because of the other? Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time,
Gary

Answer
Gary-

I'd say the two are related.  My guess is one or more bad exhaust oxygen (or "O2") sensors.  If they go bad then the computer will automatically make the run a little rich (too much fuel) which is what you're smelling.  That sulfur smell is unburned gas caused by a rich condition.  To know for sure you'll have to have the computer scanned for trouble codes, but my money is on bad O2 sensors.  Hope this helps.
