Ford Repair: heater and ac fan, needle nose pliers, ford explorer sport

Question
I have a 93 Ford Explorer sport.
I can only run my fan at off or high without getting a burning smell or sometimes a trace of smoke?

Answer
Jim, it sounds like the blower resistor pack is burnt, probably from an accumulation of leaves over the years.  You'll need to clean out the evaporator case and replace the resistor pack.  That smoke you see is the leaves catching on fire - it could get a lot worse!
From under the hood, look at the passenger side of the firewall.  You'll see the blower motor, and on the side of the box that contains the motor you'll see a rectangle about 2" x3" that has several wires going into it - this blower resistor pack is held in with two screws.  Remove the two 5/16" head screws and pull the resistors out, and remove any leaves that you can pull out the hole.  You might want to use a mirror and a pair of needle-nose pliers to get more of them out, or even some compressed air.  If it is really crammed full, you may need to disassemble the box to clean it out, but that would require evacuating the A/C and removing the acuumulator - try peeking through the hole first.
After it is clean of leaves, install and new resistor pack and you'll be ready to test it.
