Ford Repair: replacing valve cover gaskets, mail asap, replacing valve cover gaskets

Question
I have a 1990 ford ranger with a 4.0 a/c at etc.
The engine smells oil when it is warm and I know
the valve cover gaskets are leaking and oil is
leaking unto the exhaust manifold causing the
smell. I may have a rear main seal leaking also,
but could that also cause the oil smell? I only
have 69,000 miles on the truck. What kind of a
job is it to change the gaskets myself? I am
mechanical to some extent, but wonder if $250.00
to have it done is worth it?
I know the passengers side looks like a lot of work due to the required removal of a lot parts
to get to the valve cover.
Is the 4.0 in 1990 known to be a good engine, or
are they known to have numerous problems?
Please e-mail asap. I want to make a decision.
Thanks for your help. Great to have a website
that is free of charge to get help!

Answer
250 is a little steep for changing valve cover gaskets.  If they replace the rear main, its a good deal.  its not a difficult job, but you will probably have to loosen the intake manifold to get to the cover.  I dont know much about 4.0's, but my brother had one and it smoked, vibrated, and usually ran pretty crapy.
