Ford Repair: powerless powerstroke, obdii connector, gutless wonder

Question
1999 F350 4x4 dually crew cab. i have installed a chip to get some h.p. but now the engine surges, and just recently blew the transfer case. is there anyway to safely increase the horse power in this gutless wonder?????

Answer
Jim, the '99 Powerstroke is a pretty powerful engine when it is running properly... I've never heard one called a 'gutless wonder' unless something is wrong with it.
I'd recommend having a computer scan done with the factory PCM in place (no chip) and verify that engine blowby, fuel pressure, turbo boost, etc. are all OK. You may find that the waste gate isn't opening and creating excessive exhaust backpressure, or that the fuel pressure is low, or ?
Chips vary, I'm sure, but the best I've seen was a Hyperchip that a customer had installed on a '96 vintage... that Crew Cab dually would spin the back 4 from 0 - 50 on a paved parking lot!  Banks is probably the most widely used chipmaker in this area, and they have a good warranty too.
Most chips prevent the OBDII connector from communicating with factory diagnostic equipment, though, so it needs to be removed to do any testing.
Hope this helps... get that wonder to 'strokin' again!
