Ford Repair: 1994 Ford Taurus Brakes, wheel disk brakes, taurus 3

Question
When braking, the pedal sometimes feels likes it's "racheting" when you apply pressure. Also, on a few occasions, a pump can be heard whining from the front of the car when you apply the brakes. When this happens, the pedal feels likes it's pushing back against your foot. If I continue pushing, the brakes lock up. These problems do not occur every time you apply the brakes, only once in a while, say 15-25% of the time. (94 Taurus, 3.8L engine, 4 wheel disk brakes, ABS, 225,000 kms)

Answer
Hi Steve,
It sounds like you might have a cracked ABS sensor ring. Lift the front end and rotate the tire and look at the outer CV joint , where the ring is, and see if you see a crack or missing tooth on either the left or right sensor rings. If cracked, you can have the ring replaced or replace the entire CV joint or half-shaft.
