Ford Repair: Late model to classic engine swap, vehicle speed sensors, guages

Question
Hello,

I was wondering what hurdles I might run into if I were to attempt to install a late model (let's say a 1990 5.0) engine and T5 tranny into a "classic" (let's say 1967) Mustang.  Physically, the engine and transmission install would probably be the easiest thing.  Would it be possible for the speedo, tach and other guages to work without a degree in electronics?  Any help or a direction to where I could get some info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much!

Sean

Answer
Sean-

Absolutely.  This swap is actually becoming more and more popular if the questions I get are any indication.  The speedo is actually a cable controlled piece just like in a '67...the VSS (vehicle speed sensors) didn't show up until after the body styles changed in '94.  The tach might be a little tricky if you stick with the '90's EFI system.  But even then all you'd have to do is find the tach wire in the wiring harness (it's green with a yellow tracer if memory serves me...but I'd check it out before hand) and splice the wire to the tach right into that line.  But if you slap a carb on it then everything hooks up the same.  No electronics degrees required (if that were the case I'd be sooooo lost) unless you want to retain the EFI setup.  Even then it's not too hard with some good instructions...just a lot of time.  Hope this helps.
