Ford Repair: 302 motor, ford crown victoria, lincoln lsc

Question
-Hi Steve, It is great to be able to get the answers that I need. About the torque converter, what aftermarket converter would I need and where is the best and lowest priced place to buy it? Another question Steve, what is the difference between a 1990 5.0 EFI in a Ford Crown Victoria and a 1991 5.0 EFI in a Mercury Cougar XR7? Thank You, Eddie------------------------

Question -
I have a 1970 302 2 barrel. I'm thinking of installing a 600 cfm holley 4 barrel. Are the intake, head and exhaust ports larger on a 4 barrel 302 motor? Would the installation of the holley work on the 2 barrel 302? Would it bolt on to the stock intake or would I need say an edelbrock performer? I also have some heads from a 1985 5.0 Lincoln LSC HO. How would the heads work on the 1970 302? Would I need to change the cam for the holley carb? What would you suggest? Thankyou, Eddie  P. S. what about putting the cam from the 1985 5.0 LSC HO (it't not a roller but it is an HO) into the 1970 302. Stock 302 in a 1970 Ford Custom Sport Truck.

The 2 barrel intake won't work with a 4 barrel carb.  You'll need to replace it with a 4 barrel intake...I'd suggest a Weiand Stealth manifold.  Excellent performance piece for all-around driving.  The exhaust ports are a bit bigger on 4 barrel heads but that won't matter if you use the '85 LSC heads.  The heads will fit (although my first choice for production heads would be '87 or later E7TE's) but the cam will not.  302 HOs use a cam with the same base size as a 351 cam.  Regular 302s use a smaller base circle for their cams.  You don't NEED to change out the cam when you get the carb, but a properly chosen cam certainly wouldn't hurt.  But that all depends on what you want from the truck.  Hope this helps.

The cheapest place for a Weiand manifold is probably from one of the bigger mail order companies like Summit Racing or Jegs.  Check out their webistes and see where they've got them priced.  I bought one about 4 or 5 years ago and if I recall it was in the $160-$170 range.  There are cheaper intakes out there, but the Stealth intake is by far the best all-around carb manifold I've seen.  As for the cam, for good low end and midrange I'd say the Comp Cams Xtreme Energy line is probably the best way to go.  Good hydraulic flat tappet cams for your application would be XE256H-10 (Comp Cams part number 31-234-3) or XE262H-10 (part # 31-238-3).  The XE256 grind is a bit smaller with a 100-5200rpm powerband which will give you a smooth idle and strong low end power while not giving up higher in the rpm band.  The XE262 grind is a bit bigger and will probably have a slight lope to the idle from looking at it's specs.  It's powerband is 1300-5600rpm so you'd lose just a tiny bit of low end and gain some power up top and in the midrange.  For a truck, I'd pick the smaller of the two and use an aftermarket torque converter (if you're using an automatic transmission) since with trucks being so heavy it takes more low end to get them going.  You can find full specs for either cam on Comp Cams' website in their catalog.  Hope this helps.

Cheap is not what you want from a torque converter.  This is one area where less money almost always means less quality.  Personally I'd stick with the Precision Industries Stallion converter. It's expensive...I believe around $600...but it's quality is outstanding and it's much more efficient than many other converters.  You'll probably want something with a stall speed in the range of around 2000-2400rpm.  As for the motor difference between the Vic and the XR-7, the XR-7 uses the 302HO (or 5.0L) motor while the Vic uses a regular 302.  The XR-7 makes an advertised 225hp while the Vic is at around 170hp for those respective years.  Hope this helps.
