Ford Repair: 1993 Ford Taurus -Water Pump Leak, coolant leaks, taurus gl

Question
Hi Steve,

I see coolant leaks  on the drive way for  the past 3 days. I also hear a noise like that of a faulty bearing while idling -I lose about 1/4 of a gallon per day. I'm topping every day & driving. My gauge is still in the normal range ,doesn't heat up ..

My questions to you  :
1. Do I have to lift the engine out of the car to replace the coolant pump ? ( 3.0 L, '93 Taurus GL)

2. The coolant drips on the muffler & so some  smoke over the hood while drivin & parking  - is this bad for the muffler ? CAN COOLANT GET INTO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM?

3. The car has 43k miles . Can I drive to Richmond,VA ( 300 miles) to fix at my regular dealership rather than findin' a new mechanic at Delaware (I'm new here)

Thank you ,
Dharmee

Generally the engine won't have to be completely removed, but it will have to tilted up to allow for enough room to get to the pump.  Coolant dripping on the muffler isn't a big deal.  So long as there aren't any holes or cracks/bad seals in the exhaust system you shouldn't have any problem.  As far as the drive to Richmond, I'd say it's safe BUT I'd also take along a tank of coolant and make short stops every 50-100 miles and top the radiator off if it needs it just to be safe.  And keep a close eye on the temp. gauge.  Hope this helps.
