Honda Repair: 99 Civic SI, cruise control, vtec

Question
I have a 1999 Civic SI with the 16B engine.  It was stored for about a year and a half and everything was working fine prior to storing it.  I just charged the battery and changed the oil and started it up and the following are not working.  1.  The VTEC will not kick in at all.  2.  The check engine light is on.  3.  the cruise control will not work.  Will not even turn the light on where you control the power for the cruise on the dash.  Any ideas?

Answer
There are several things that might be going on here. But the first thing to think about is that it is never good to store a vehicle for a long period of time. They are not made to be stored. they are made to be used. When they are stored it is common for things to not work properly.
That being said the first thing I would do is drive it for a few days and see if things start working again. Many times it just takes a while for everything to get going again.
I would have the check engine light checked to see what the code is. It might be something that needs to be taken care of right away.
